Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Akawi cheese is a fresh, semi-soft cheese and requires refrigeration even when unopened. Do not store at room temperature.
Refrigerator
1 week
Store opened Akawi cheese tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, or in an airtight container. If stored in brine, ensure it is submerged in fresh, clean brine and kept refrigerated.
Freezer
6 months
While safe to freeze for up to 6 months, the texture of Akawi cheese may become crumbly or mealy upon thawing. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or a freezer bag to prevent freezer burn.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold (other than intentional mold on certain cheeses)
- Sour, ammonia-like, or off-odor
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Significant discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C). Food should not remain in this temperature range for extended periods.
Refrigerate Akawi cheese promptly after purchase and after each use. Discard any cheese left out within the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling cheese.
Use clean utensils and cutting boards to prevent cross-contamination.
Keep cheese refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Do not leave Akawi cheese at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
