Unopened: 1 year or until 'best by' date; Opened: Not recommended
Store unopened commercial applesauce in a cool, dark pantry. Once opened, refrigerate promptly.
Refrigerator
Opened: 7-10 days
Store opened commercial or homemade applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
8-12 months
Freeze applesauce in airtight, freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Leave headspace for expansion.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth on the surface
- Off-odor (sour, fermented, or yeasty smell)
- Discoloration (darkening or unusual color changes)
- Fizzy appearance or bubbling (indicating fermentation)
- Unusual texture (slimy or excessively watery)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F and 140°F (4°C and 60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Promptly refrigerate or discard opened applesauce that has been at room temperature for too long to prevent bacterial growth and potential foodborne illness.
Safe Handling
Always use clean utensils when serving applesauce to prevent contamination.
Do not leave opened applesauce at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
