Baby arugula is highly perishable and should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Refrigerate promptly.

Refrigerator

3-7 days

Store unwashed baby arugula in a loose plastic bag or an airtight container lined with a paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash just before use.

Freezer

8-12 months

While safe indefinitely, for best quality, blanch baby arugula before freezing. Wash, blanch briefly in boiling water, cool quickly in ice water, drain well, pat dry, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Wilting or limp leaves
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Yellowing or browning of leaves
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Presence of mold

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4.4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

To maintain safety and quality, baby arugula should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and kept out of the danger zone. Discard any arugula left at room temperature for longer than the recommended time.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash baby arugula thoroughly under cool running water just before use to remove any dirt or debris.

2

Do not wash until ready to use, as moisture can accelerate spoilage.

3

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping baby arugula separate from raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs.

4

Use clean cutting boards, utensils, and hands when preparing.
