Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended for extended storage

Store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated area for a very short period if refrigeration is not immediately available. Best quality and safety are maintained in the refrigerator.

Refrigerator

3-4 weeks

Store unwashed baby carrots in a plastic bag or container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Do not store with fruits that produce ethylene gas (like apples or pears) as this can cause bitterness.

Freezer

8-12 months

For best quality, blanch baby carrots before freezing. Wash, peel if desired, and cut to desired size. Boil for 2 minutes, then immediately cool in ice water. Drain thoroughly, pack into airtight freezer bags or containers, and freeze.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • White blush or discoloration (often due to dehydration, but can indicate spoilage if accompanied by other signs)
  • Off-odor
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

Follow the 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable food out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Baby carrots, like other fresh produce, should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and preparation to maintain safety and quality. Discard any carrots left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash baby carrots thoroughly under running water before eating or preparing.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw vegetables separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.

3

Use a clean cutting board and utensils when preparing.
