Baby LettuceShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Store in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and safety. Pantry storage will cause rapid wilting and spoilage.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Store unwashed baby lettuce in a loose plastic bag or breathable container in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly under cool running water just before use.
Freezer
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Freezing is not recommended for fresh baby lettuce as it will become limp, watery, and lose its texture upon thawing, making it unsuitable for salads. While some greens can be blanched and frozen for cooking, this is not typical for baby lettuce.
Signs of Spoilage
- Excessive wilting or limpness
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Discoloration (yellowing, browning, or black spots)
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Visible mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Refrigerate baby lettuce promptly after purchase. Discard any baby lettuce left at room temperature for longer than 2 hours (or 1 hour if above 90°F) to prevent bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash baby lettuce thoroughly under cool running water just before eating or preparing.
Do not wash lettuce until immediately before use to prevent premature spoilage.
Remove any damaged or discolored outer leaves before storage or use.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping baby lettuce separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
