Baby red chard requires refrigeration to maintain freshness and safety. Pantry storage will lead to rapid wilting and spoilage.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store unwashed baby red chard in a loose plastic bag or wrapped in a damp paper towel in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly just before use.

Freezer

10-12 months

To freeze baby red chard, blanch the leaves for 2 minutes in boiling water, then immediately cool in ice water. Drain thoroughly, pat dry, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Wilting and limp texture
  • Slimy or mushy leaves
  • Off-odor or sour smell
  • Yellowing or browning of leaves
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Do not leave baby red chard at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), refrigerate or discard within 1 hour to prevent rapid bacterial growth.
