Fresh spinach should not be stored at room temperature for more than 2 hours. It is highly perishable.

Refrigerator

3-7 days

Store unwashed baby spinach in its original packaging or a loose plastic bag in the crisper drawer. Do not wash until ready to use to prevent premature spoilage.

Freezer

10-12 months (blanched)

For best quality, blanch baby spinach before freezing. Wash, blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes, cool quickly in ice water, drain thoroughly, then pack into freezer-safe bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Significant wilting or discoloration (yellowing or browning)
  • Presence of mold

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-Hour Rule: Perishable foods, including fresh produce, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

To ensure safety, refrigerate baby spinach promptly after purchase. If left out, discard after the recommended time limits.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash baby spinach thoroughly under cool running water just before use, even if pre-washed, to remove any dirt or debris.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping fresh produce separate from raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs.

3

Use clean cutting boards, utensils, and hands when preparing spinach.

4

Discard any spinach that shows signs of spoilage.
