Fresh spinach is highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately to maintain quality and safety.

Refrigerator

3-7 days

Store unwashed baby spinach in its original packaging or a loose plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Avoid washing until ready to use to prevent premature spoilage.

Freezer

10-12 months

For best quality, blanch baby spinach before freezing. Wash thoroughly, blanch in boiling water for 2 minutes, then immediately cool in ice water. Drain well, squeeze out excess water, and pack tightly into freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Yellowing or browning leaves
  • Off-odor
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Perishable foods, including fresh baby spinach, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

Safe Handling

1

Wash baby spinach thoroughly under cool running water just before use.
