Unsafe

Bacon is a perishable meat product and must be refrigerated or frozen for safety.

Refrigerator

7 days

Store raw bacon in its original unopened package in the coldest part of the refrigerator. Once opened, keep tightly wrapped and use within 7 days.

Freezer

1 month

For best quality, freeze raw bacon in its original packaging, overwrapped with heavy-duty foil or placed in a freezer bag. For longer storage, consider vacuum sealing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Discoloration (greenish, grayish, or dull appearance)
  • Presence of mold

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Raw bacon should be refrigerated or frozen promptly. Never leave raw bacon out at room temperature for extended periods.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling raw bacon.

2

Prevent cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw bacon and other foods.

3

Cook bacon thoroughly until crisp. While pork can be cooked to 145°F (63°C) with a 3-minute rest, bacon is typically cooked to a higher temperature for texture and safety.

4

Refrigerate cooked bacon within 2 hours of cooking.
