Fresh cheeses require constant refrigeration to prevent bacterial growth.

Refrigerator

1 week

Store in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in its original packaging or plastic wrap to prevent drying out and absorption of odors. Keep in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Freezer

1-2 months

While safe to freeze, the texture of soft cheeses like Baladi may become crumbly or watery upon thawing. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Visible mold (unless it's a mold-ripened cheese, which Baladi is not)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Significant discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including Baladi cheese, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Refrigerate Baladi cheese promptly. If left out too long, harmful bacteria can grow to dangerous levels, even if the cheese still looks and smells fine.
