Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended for extended storage; best quality 1-2 days

Store at room temperature in a jar with stems in water, loosely covered, away from direct sunlight. Use within 1-2 days for best quality before significant wilting occurs.

Refrigerator

7-10 days

Store unwashed, wrapped in a damp paper towel, and placed in a plastic bag or airtight container in the crisper drawer. Alternatively, place stems in a jar of water, cover loosely with a plastic bag, and refrigerate.

Freezer

6-8 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Wash and thoroughly dry leaves. Freeze whole leaves on a baking sheet, then transfer to an airtight freezer bag. Alternatively, chop leaves and freeze in ice cube trays with a small amount of water or olive oil.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Wilting or drooping leaves
  • Darkening or blackening of leaves
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Mold growth
  • Sour or off-odor

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Fresh basil should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour, as this promotes rapid bacterial growth and spoilage.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash fresh basil leaves under cool running water just before use.

2

Avoid washing basil before storage as excess moisture can promote spoilage.

3

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping fresh herbs separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
