BeveragesShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe for most opened beverages
Opened perishable beverages should be refrigerated promptly. Unopened shelf-stable beverages should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Refrigerator
Varies significantly by type (e.g., 3-7 days for most opened juices, 7-10 days for opened milk, 3-4 days for brewed coffee/tea)
Keep all opened or prepared beverages tightly sealed in their original containers or airtight pitchers/bottles. Store on a shelf, not in the door, for more consistent temperature.
Freezer
Varies by type; some beverages can be frozen for 1-3 months, others are not recommended
Do not freeze carbonated beverages in their original containers. Leave headspace in containers when freezing liquids to allow for expansion. Quality may degrade upon thawing for some beverages.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or unusual smell)
- Sour or unusual taste
- Mold growth
- Cloudiness or sediment (if not typical for the beverage)
- Fizzy texture or gas production (for non-carbonated drinks)
- Bulging or leaking containers (for unopened beverages)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable beverages should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time reduces to 1 hour. Discard any beverage left out longer than these limits.
Safe Handling
Always check product-specific labels for storage instructions and 'best by' dates.
Do not drink directly from containers that will be stored to prevent contamination.
Discard any perishable beverage left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
Wash hands before handling or preparing beverages.
