Pantry

Not Recommended

Not recommended

Fresh mushrooms are highly perishable and should be refrigerated promptly. Pantry storage is not recommended for optimal safety and quality.

Refrigerator

4-7 days

Store unwashed fresh mushrooms in a paper bag or their original packaging in the refrigerator. Avoid storing in airtight plastic bags, which can trap moisture and accelerate spoilage.

Freezer

10-12 months

For best quality, blanch or sauté mushrooms before freezing. Cool completely, then pack in airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Dark spots or discoloration
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F

Perishable foods, including fresh mushrooms, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash mushrooms gently under cool running water or wipe with a damp cloth just before use; avoid soaking.

2

Cook mushrooms thoroughly until tender.

3

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw mushrooms separate from other foods, especially raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
