Not recommended

Blackberries are highly perishable and should be refrigerated immediately after purchase to maintain quality and safety.

Refrigerator

3-6 days

Store unwashed blackberries in a single layer in a shallow container lined with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Cover loosely and refrigerate. Wash gently just before eating.

Freezer

10-12 months

Wash and dry blackberries thoroughly. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth (fuzzy white or gray spots)
  • Soft, mushy, or shriveled texture
  • Sour or fermented odor
  • Leaking juice or excessive stickiness
  • Significant discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Fresh blackberries should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), they should be refrigerated or discarded within 1 hour to prevent rapid bacterial growth.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling fresh produce.

2

Wash blackberries gently under cool running water just before consumption. Do not wash them in advance, as moisture can accelerate spoilage.

3

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping fresh produce separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
