Blueberries are highly perishable and should be refrigerated promptly after purchase to maintain quality and safety.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks
Store unwashed blueberries in their original container or a breathable container in the refrigerator. Wash gently just before eating.
Freezer
8-12 months
Wash and dry blueberries thoroughly. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer to freezer bags or airtight containers. Do not thaw before using in recipes.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold growth (fuzzy white or gray spots)
- Soft, mushy texture
- Sour or fermented odor
- Significant discoloration or shriveling
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Blueberries should be refrigerated as soon as possible after purchase. If left at room temperature, they should be consumed or refrigerated within 2 hours to minimize bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash blueberries gently under cool running water just before eating or using.
Sort through blueberries and discard any that are moldy or damaged before storage.
Prevent cross-contamination by keeping blueberries separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
