Not recommended for extended storage

Blueberries are highly perishable; refrigeration is recommended for optimal freshness and safety. If kept at room temperature, consume within 1-2 days.

Refrigerator

1 to 2 weeks

Store unwashed blueberries in their original container or a shallow container lined with paper towels in the refrigerator. Wash just before eating.

Freezer

8 to 12 months

Wash and dry blueberries thoroughly. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft, mushy texture
  • Presence of mold (fuzzy white or gray spots)
  • Sour or fermented odor
  • Leaking juice or excessive moisture in the container

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Blueberries left at room temperature for longer than 2 hours (or 1 hour above 90°F) should be discarded due to potential bacterial growth.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash blueberries gently under cool running water just before eating or using.

2

Do not wash blueberries before storing them in the refrigerator, as moisture can promote mold growth.

3

Discard any bruised, moldy, or shriveled berries before storage to prevent spoilage of the entire batch.

4

Keep blueberries separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood to prevent cross-contamination.
