Boxed MilkShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Several months to a year (unopened)
Store unopened cartons in a cool, dark, dry place. Once opened, refrigeration is required.
Refrigerator
7 days (once opened)
Refrigerate promptly after opening. Keep tightly sealed in its original container or an airtight pitcher.
Freezer
3 months
Milk can be frozen in its original container if headspace is allowed for expansion, or transferred to an airtight freezer-safe container. Thaw in the refrigerator. Quality (texture/separation) may be affected but it remains safe.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Lumpy or curdled texture
- Discoloration (e.g., yellowish tint)
- Mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Opened milk should be returned to the refrigerator as quickly as possible after use to maintain its safety and quality.
Safe Handling
Always check the 'use-by' or 'best-by' date on the carton.
Once opened, treat shelf-stable milk like regular milk and refrigerate promptly.
Do not consume milk that has been left at room temperature for too long after opening.
