BreadfruitShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Unripe: 3-7 days
Store unripe breadfruit at cool room temperature (55-70°F / 13-21°C) away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate unripe breadfruit as it can suffer chilling injury. Once ripe, it should be refrigerated or processed immediately.
Refrigerator
Ripe: 3-5 days
Store ripe breadfruit in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator's crisper drawer. Consume promptly.
Freezer
Blanched/Cooked: 8-12 months
Peel, core, and cut breadfruit into desired pieces. Blanch in boiling water for 3-5 minutes, then cool rapidly in ice water. Drain well, pat dry, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible. Can also be cooked and mashed before freezing.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Dark discoloration or black spots
- Mold growth
- Sour or fermented odor
- Slimy surface
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Promptly refrigerate or freeze breadfruit once it is ripe or has been cut/cooked to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any breadfruit left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Wash breadfruit thoroughly under running water before peeling or cutting.
Use clean utensils and cutting boards to prevent cross-contamination.
Refrigerate cooked breadfruit within 2 hours.
Do not leave cut breadfruit at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if above 90°F/32°C).
