Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Broccoli requires refrigeration to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
Refrigerator
3-5 days
Store unwashed broccoli in a loose or perforated plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Do not wash before storing as moisture can promote mold growth.
Freezer
10-12 months
For best quality, blanch broccoli florets and stems in boiling water for 3 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water. Drain thoroughly, pat dry, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers.
Signs of Spoilage
- Yellowing florets
- Soft or slimy texture
- Presence of mold
- Off-odor
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Broccoli should be refrigerated promptly after purchase. Do not leave fresh broccoli at room temperature for extended periods.
Safe Handling
Wash fresh broccoli thoroughly under running water just before use.
Keep raw broccoli separate from raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs to prevent cross-contamination.
Do not store broccoli near ethylene-producing fruits like apples or bananas, as this can accelerate spoilage.
