Not recommended

Broccoli requires refrigeration to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.

Refrigerator

3-5 days

Store unwashed broccoli loosely wrapped in a damp paper towel or in an open plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Do not wash until ready to use.

Freezer

10-12 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Blanch broccoli florets for 3 minutes in boiling water, then immediately cool in ice water for 3 minutes. Drain thoroughly, pat dry, and pack into airtight freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Yellowing florets
  • Soft, slimy, or mushy texture
  • Off-odor
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C)

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Do not leave fresh broccoli at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), do not leave it out for more than 1 hour, as bacteria multiply rapidly in the danger zone.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Wash broccoli thoroughly under running water just before eating or cooking.

2

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw broccoli separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.

3

If cooking, ensure it reaches desired tenderness. If consuming raw, ensure it is clean.
