Store unopened commercially canned or packaged broth in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, broth must be refrigerated promptly.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Store opened commercially packaged or homemade broth in clean, airtight containers. Refrigerate promptly after opening or preparing.

Freezer

2-3 months for best quality, safe indefinitely

Freeze broth in airtight freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace for expansion. Label with the date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Cloudy appearance (if it was clear)
  • Mold growth
  • Slimy texture
  • Fizzy or bubbling appearance

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable foods, including broth, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Always refrigerate or freeze broth promptly. Never leave opened or homemade broth out on the counter for extended periods.
