Pantry

1-2 days (salted butter only)

Salted butter can be left at room temperature for 1 to 2 days. Unsalted butter should always be refrigerated. Store in an airtight container to prevent absorption of odors.

Refrigerator

1-3 months

Store butter in its original wrapper or an airtight container in the coldest part of the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent absorption of odors.

Freezer

6-9 months

For best quality, wrap butter tightly in its original packaging, then in aluminum foil or a freezer bag, to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors. Freeze at 0°F (-18°C) or below.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid or sour odor
  • Off-flavor
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration (darkening or yellowing beyond normal)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to perishable foods. Do not leave perishable foods out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

While salted butter can be left out for a short period, for optimal safety and quality, butter should not remain in the danger zone (40°F–140°F) for more than 2 hours total. If left out longer, it should be discarded.
