ButterShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1-2 days (salted butter only)
Salted butter can be left at room temperature for 1 to 2 days. Unsalted butter should always be refrigerated. Store in an airtight container to prevent absorption of odors.
Refrigerator
1-3 months
Store butter in its original wrapper or an airtight container in the coldest part of the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent absorption of odors.
Freezer
6-9 months
For best quality, wrap butter tightly in its original packaging, then in aluminum foil or a freezer bag, to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors. Freeze at 0°F (-18°C) or below.
Signs of Spoilage
- Rancid or sour odor
- Off-flavor
- Mold growth
- Discoloration (darkening or yellowing beyond normal)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)
While salted butter can be left out for a short period, for optimal safety and quality, butter should not remain in the danger zone (40°F–140°F) for more than 2 hours total. If left out longer, it should be discarded.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling food.
Keep butter refrigerated until ready to use to maintain quality and safety.
Prevent cross-contamination by using clean utensils and surfaces when handling butter, especially if it will be spread on other foods.
