Pantry

1-2 days

Keep tightly wrapped to prevent absorption of odors. For best quality and longer storage, refrigeration is recommended.

Refrigerator

1-3 months

Store in its original wrapper or an airtight container in the coldest part of the refrigerator to prevent absorption of odors and maintain quality.

Freezer

6-9 months

Wrap butter tightly in aluminum foil or plastic freezer wrap, or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Rancid or sour odor
  • Off-flavor
  • Discoloration (darker yellow, white spots, or mold)
  • Hard, crumbly texture (beyond normal refrigeration hardening)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave butter at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The danger zone for perishable foods is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

While butter can be left out for a short period for spreadability, for safety and quality, it should be refrigerated. Discard any butter left in the danger zone for too long.
