ButterShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1-2 days
Keep tightly wrapped to prevent absorption of odors. For best quality and longer storage, refrigeration is recommended.
Refrigerator
1-3 months
Store in its original wrapper or an airtight container in the coldest part of the refrigerator to prevent absorption of odors and maintain quality.
Freezer
6-9 months
Wrap butter tightly in aluminum foil or plastic freezer wrap, or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container to prevent freezer burn and absorption of odors.
Signs of Spoilage
- Rancid or sour odor
- Off-flavor
- Discoloration (darker yellow, white spots, or mold)
- Hard, crumbly texture (beyond normal refrigeration hardening)
Room Temperature Safety
The danger zone for perishable foods is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
While butter can be left out for a short period for spreadability, for safety and quality, it should be refrigerated. Discard any butter left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands before and after handling food.
Keep butter wrapped to prevent it from absorbing odors from other foods.
Do not leave butter at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F / 32°C).
