Store unopened commercial butterscotch sauce in a cool, dry place. Once opened or if homemade, refrigerate promptly.
Refrigerator
1-2 weeks
Store in a clean, airtight container. Label with the date it was opened or made.
Freezer
2-3 months
Freeze in airtight, freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Leave headspace for expansion. Thaw in the refrigerator.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, fermented, or unusual smell)
- Mold growth (fuzzy spots of any color)
- Discoloration (darkening or unusual color changes)
- Unusual texture (slimy, watery, or hardened)
- Separation of ingredients not typical for the sauce
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
