Not recommended for extended periods

Whole cabbage can be stored in a cool, dark place for 1-2 days, but refrigeration is highly recommended for optimal quality and safety.

Refrigerator

3 weeks to 2 months (whole); 3-4 days (cut)

Store whole, unwashed cabbage in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer. For cut cabbage, store tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container.

Freezer

10-12 months (blanched)

Blanch cabbage leaves or wedges for 1.5 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water, drain thoroughly, and pack into freezer bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Soft, slimy, or discolored leaves (especially dark spots)
  • Unpleasant or sour odor
  • Presence of mold

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to cut cabbage: Do not leave cut cabbage at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

40°F–140°F

Whole, uncut cabbage can be left at room temperature for a short period, but refrigeration is best for maintaining quality and safety. Cut cabbage should always be refrigerated promptly.
