CalamansiShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 week
Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Calamansi will dry out faster at room temperature.
Refrigerator
2-3 weeks
Store in a plastic bag or the crisper drawer of the refrigerator to maintain moisture and extend shelf life.
Freezer
3-4 months
Whole calamansi can be frozen. For best quality, wash and dry thoroughly, then place in a freezer-safe bag or container. Calamansi juice or zest can also be frozen in ice cube trays or airtight containers.
Signs of Spoilage
- Soft spots or mushy texture
- Discoloration (dark spots or dullness)
- Mold growth (fuzzy white, green, or black spots)
- Off-odor or fermented smell
- Dry or shriveled skin
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
While calamansi can be stored at room temperature for a short period (up to 1 week), refrigeration is recommended to significantly extend its shelf life and maintain quality. Do not leave cut calamansi at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Safe Handling
Wash fresh calamansi thoroughly under running water before use.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping calamansi separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Do not consume calamansi that shows signs of spoilage.
