Pantry

Not Recommended

Unsafe once opened; follow 'Best By' date for unopened

Store unopened in a cool, dry place until 'Best By' date. Once opened, refrigerate immediately as soft cheeses are highly perishable.

Refrigerator

1 week

Store tightly wrapped in its original packaging or in an airtight container to prevent drying out and absorbing odors. Place in the warmest part of the refrigerator, such as the cheese drawer or a vegetable crisper.

Freezer

Not Recommended

Not recommended for freezing due to quality changes

While safe indefinitely from a food safety standpoint when frozen, soft cheeses like Camembert will likely experience significant texture changes, becoming crumbly or mealy upon thawing. Not recommended for best quality.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Unusual sour or ammonia-like odor (beyond its normal pungent aroma)
  • Visible mold (other than the intentional white rind)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Significant discoloration beyond normal aging

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Do not leave perishable foods, including Camembert, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate Camembert after purchase and use. Discard any cheese left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time.
