Canned ChickenShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
2-5 years
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures (ideally below 75°F/24°C). While safe indefinitely if hermetically sealed and stored properly, quality is best within 2-5 years. Once opened, do not store in the can; transfer contents to an airtight container.
Refrigerator
3-4 days
Once opened, transfer canned chicken to a clean, airtight container (glass or plastic) and refrigerate promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
2-6 months
Once opened, transfer canned chicken to a freezer-safe, airtight container or heavy-duty freezer bag. Label with the date. While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 2-6 months.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, putrid)
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration
- Mold growth
- Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product)
- Foaming or bubbling liquid
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or freeze opened canned chicken to minimize time spent in the danger zone. Discard any opened canned chicken left out for too long.
Safe Handling
Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling food.
Never store opened canned food in the can; transfer to a clean, non-metallic storage container.
Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and ready-to-eat foods.
Ensure cans are not dented, bulging, or leaking before opening, as these are signs of spoilage and potential botulism.
