Pantry

2-5 years

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Check 'best by' date. Once opened, do not store in pantry; transfer contents to an airtight container and refrigerate.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Once opened, drain and rinse chickpeas. Transfer to a clean, airtight, food-grade container. Do not store in the original can.

Freezer

2-3 months

Drain and rinse chickpeas thoroughly. Pat dry. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or airtight containers. Label with date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • For unopened cans: bulging, leaking, rusting, or deep dents in the can.
  • For opened chickpeas: sour or off-odor, slimy texture, mold growth, or discoloration.

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Once opened, canned chickpeas should be refrigerated promptly. Do not leave them out at room temperature within the danger zone for extended periods to prevent rapid bacterial growth.
