Canned Coconut MilkShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Unopened: Use by date on can; Opened: Unsafe
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, coconut milk should not be stored at room temperature due to rapid bacterial growth.
Refrigerator
Opened: 4-7 days
Transfer opened coconut milk to a clean, airtight container (not the original can) before refrigerating. Store on an interior shelf where the temperature is most consistent.
Freezer
Opened: Up to 3 months; Unopened: Not recommended
For opened coconut milk, transfer to freezer-safe containers or ice cube trays. Leave headspace as liquid expands when frozen. The texture may become grainy or separate upon thawing, but it remains safe to consume. Do not freeze unopened cans as they may burst.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off odor
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration
- Unusual or slimy texture
- Bulging or leaking can (for unopened product, indicates spoilage and should be discarded immediately)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Always refrigerate opened canned coconut milk promptly. Never leave it out on the counter for extended periods within the danger zone.
Safe Handling
Always refrigerate canned coconut milk promptly after opening.
Do not store opened canned coconut milk in the original can; transfer to an airtight container.
Discard any perishable food, including opened coconut milk, that has been left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
