Canned Cranberry SauceShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide

Sourced from
USDA FoodSafety.govFDA

Pantry

1 year or more (check 'Best By' date for unopened can)

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure cans are not dented, bulging, or leaking.

Refrigerator

5-7 days (after opening)

After opening, transfer cranberry sauce to a clean, airtight, non-metallic container before refrigerating. Do not store in the opened can.

Freezer

1-2 months (for best quality after opening)

Transfer opened cranberry sauce to a freezer-safe, airtight container. While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 1-2 months.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (sour, yeasty, or fermented smell)
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration
  • Unusual texture (slimy or excessively watery)
  • For unopened cans: bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans are signs of potential spoilage and should be discarded immediately.

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), this time is reduced to 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate or discard opened cranberry sauce that has been at room temperature within the danger zone for too long.
