Canned Evaporated MilkShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 year past printed date for best quality, indefinitely safe if can is intact and stored properly
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not store above 75°F (24°C).
Refrigerator
3-5 days (after opening)
Once opened, transfer unused evaporated milk to an airtight container and refrigerate promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
Safe but quality may suffer (texture may become grainy or separate)
While safe to freeze, the texture of evaporated milk may change (become grainy or separate) upon thawing. For best quality, it is not recommended. If freezing, transfer to a freezer-safe, airtight container, leaving headspace.
Signs of Spoilage
- Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product)
- Foul or sour odor
- Mold growth
- Discoloration
- Unusual texture or consistency
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Opened evaporated milk should be refrigerated promptly. Never leave opened evaporated milk out at room temperature for extended periods to prevent bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Always inspect cans for damage (dents, bulges, leaks) before opening. Discard damaged cans.
Once opened, refrigerate promptly and use within 3-5 days.
Do not consume if the can is bulging, leaking, or if the product has an off odor or appearance.
