Pantry

12-18 months for best quality, safe indefinitely if not bulging/leaking (unopened)

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Do not store above 75°F (24°C).

Refrigerator

3-4 days (opened)

Once opened, transfer contents to a clean, airtight glass or plastic storage container. Do not store in the opened can.

Freezer

Not recommended for quality, but safe indefinitely at 0°F (-18°C) (opened)

If freezing opened canned fruit, transfer contents to freezer-safe containers or bags, leaving headspace for expansion. Quality (texture) may be affected upon thawing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • For unopened cans: Bulging, leaking, rust, or a foul odor when opened.
  • For opened/refrigerated fruit: Mold, off-odor (sour, yeasty), slimy texture, discoloration, or fermentation (bubbles).

Room Temperature Safety

2-hour rule (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F / 32°C) for opened canned fruit. Unopened canned fruit is shelf-stable.

40°F–140°F (4°C–60°C)

Opened canned fruit should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours (or 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F / 32°C). Promptly refrigerate or discard.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Before opening, inspect cans for dents, bulges, leaks, or rust. Discard any damaged cans.

2

Wash can tops before opening to prevent contaminants from entering the food.

3

Once opened, treat canned fruit like fresh fruit; refrigerate promptly.

4

Never taste food from a bulging or leaking can, as this can be a sign of botulism.
