Pantry

1 year past printed date for best quality, indefinitely safe if can is intact and undamaged

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. Do not store above 75°F (24°C).

Refrigerator

Unopened: Not necessary; Opened: 3-4 days

Once opened, transfer green beans to a clean, airtight, non-metallic container and refrigerate promptly.

Freezer

Not recommended for quality

Freezing unopened cans is not recommended as it can cause the can to burst. Freezing opened canned green beans is safe but will result in significant texture and flavor degradation. If freezing opened beans, transfer to a freezer-safe container, leaving headspace.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened cans, indicates potential botulism or other bacterial growth)
  • Foul or off-odor upon opening
  • Mold growth
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Unusual discoloration

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave perishable foods, including opened canned green beans, at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Promptly refrigerate opened canned green beans to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any opened green beans left in the danger zone for too long.
