Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Once opened, do not store in the can; transfer contents to an airtight container.
Refrigerator
3-4 days (opened)
After opening, transfer soup to a clean, airtight container. Refrigerate promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
2-3 months (opened, transferred to freezer-safe container)
Transfer opened soup to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace for expansion. Do not freeze in the can.
Signs of Spoilage
- Bulging, leaking, or deeply dented cans (for unopened cans, indicates potential botulism)
- Foul or off-odor when opened
- Mold growth
- Unusual discoloration
- Foaming or bubbling
- Sour or off-taste
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or freeze opened soup to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any soup left in the danger zone for too long.
Safe Handling
Always check cans for damage (bulges, leaks, deep dents) before opening. Discard damaged cans.
Once opened, transfer unused portions to a clean, airtight container and refrigerate within 2 hours.
Reheat soup to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
Do not taste food that looks or smells suspicious.
