Pantry

2-5 years (best quality), safe indefinitely

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep cans free from dents, rust, or swelling.

Refrigerator

3-4 days

Once opened, transfer unused lentils to a clean, airtight container. Do not store in the opened can.

Freezer

2-3 months

For best quality, transfer cooked lentils to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Label with the date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (sour, putrid)
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration
  • Slimy or mushy texture
  • Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave opened canned lentils at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Opened canned lentils should be refrigerated promptly to prevent bacterial growth if not consumed immediately. Discard any portion left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.

2

Do not consume directly from the can if you intend to store leftovers, as this can introduce bacteria.

3

If heating, ensure lentils are heated thoroughly to an appropriate serving temperature.

4

Discard any cans that are bulging, leaking, severely dented, or show signs of rust, as these can indicate spoilage or botulism risk.
