Pantry

12-18 months

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Do not store above or near the stove, under the sink, in a damp garage or basement, or in direct sunlight.

Refrigerator

5-7 days

Once opened, transfer unused canned pears to a clean, airtight glass or plastic container. Do not store in the original can.

Freezer

2 months

For best quality, transfer opened canned pears to a freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag. While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 2 months.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Unopened can: Bulging, leaking, deep dents, rust, or a foul odor upon opening.
  • Opened/Refrigerated: Mold growth, off-odor (sour or fermented smell), slimy texture, or unusual discoloration.

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Do not leave opened canned pears at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Opened canned pears should be refrigerated promptly to prevent bacterial growth. Never leave them out on the counter for extended periods.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

1

Always inspect unopened cans for damage such as bulging, leaks, or deep dents. Discard any damaged cans.

2

Do not taste food from a bulging or leaking can, as this can be a sign of botulism.

3

Once opened, promptly transfer any unused portion to a clean, airtight container and refrigerate.
