Canned PumpkinShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 year (unopened)
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For best quality, use within 1 year or by the 'Best By' date on the can. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate.
Refrigerator
3-4 days (opened)
Immediately transfer opened canned pumpkin to a clean, airtight container. Do not store in the opened can. Place in the coldest part of the refrigerator.
Freezer
3-4 months (opened)
For best quality, transfer opened canned pumpkin to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Leave about 1/2 inch headspace for expansion. Label with the date and freeze promptly.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, fermented, or unusual smell)
- Mold growth (any visible fuzzy spots)
- Discoloration (darkening or unusual color changes)
- Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product, indicates potential botulism risk and should be discarded immediately)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Opened canned pumpkin should be refrigerated or frozen promptly to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any opened canned pumpkin left in the danger zone for too long.

Always wash hands with soap and water before and after handling food.
Use clean utensils and containers when opening and storing canned pumpkin.
Never taste food that looks or smells suspicious to determine if it's safe.
