Pantry

2-5 years (unopened)

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Check 'Best By' date for optimal quality.

Refrigerator

3-4 days (opened)

Once opened, transfer refried beans from the can to a clean, airtight container. Refrigerate promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.

Freezer

2-3 months

For best quality, transfer cooked refried beans to airtight freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Thaw in the refrigerator.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Sour or off odor
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration
  • Slimy texture
  • For unopened cans: bulging, leaking, rust, or deep dents

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Discard any opened refried beans that have been left in the 'Danger Zone' for longer than the recommended time limits.
