Sourced from
USDA FoodSafety.govFDA

Pantry

Indefinite (for safety, if unopened and properly stored)

Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. For best quality, consume within 2-5 years.

Refrigerator

3-4 days (once opened)

Once opened, transfer unused rice to an airtight container and refrigerate promptly. Treat as cooked rice.

Freezer

2-3 months (once opened and cooked)

Once opened, if you wish to freeze, transfer to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags. Label with the date.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Off-odor (sour or unpleasant smell)
  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Mold growth
  • Discoloration
  • Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened cans, indicates botulism risk)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies to opened canned rice: Do not leave perishable foods out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Opened canned rice should be refrigerated or frozen within 2 hours to prevent bacterial growth. Discard any rice left in the danger zone for too long.

Expert Tips

3

Once opened, treat canned rice like any other cooked rice; refrigerate promptly.

4

Reheat any leftover cooked rice to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
