Canned Sweetened Condensed MilkShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
1 year (for best quality), safe for several years
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
Refrigerator
3-5 days
Once opened, transfer sweetened condensed milk to a clean, airtight container before refrigerating. Do not store in the opened can.
Freezer
Not recommended for quality, but safe indefinitely
While safe indefinitely from a food safety standpoint, freezing sweetened condensed milk is not recommended due to potential changes in texture (may become grainy or separate) upon thawing. If freezing, transfer to an airtight, freezer-safe container, leaving headspace.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor
- Mold growth
- Significant discoloration
- Unusual texture (e.g., excessively thick, lumpy, or separated)
- Bulging, leaking, or severely dented cans (for unopened product)
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Once opened, sweetened condensed milk should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), it should not be left out for more than 1 hour.
Safe Handling
Always transfer opened canned sweetened condensed milk to a clean, airtight container before refrigerating.
Do not store opened cans in the refrigerator, as the metal can react with the food and impart an off-flavor.
Discard any cans that are bulging, leaking, or severely dented, as this can indicate spoilage or botulism risk.
