Canned TomatoesShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
12-18 months
Store unopened cans in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Ensure cans are not bulging, leaking, or deeply dented.
Refrigerator
5-7 days
Once opened, transfer unused canned tomatoes to a clean, airtight, non-metallic container (e.g., glass or plastic) and refrigerate promptly. Do not store in the original can.
Freezer
2-3 months
For best quality, transfer opened and unused canned tomatoes to freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags, leaving headspace. While safe indefinitely, quality may decline after 2-3 months.
Signs of Spoilage
- Bulging, leaking, or deeply dented cans (for unopened cans)
- Foul or off-odor
- Mold growth
- Discoloration
- Foaming or bubbling (fermentation)
- Unusual texture
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for food is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.
Unopened canned tomatoes are shelf-stable. Once opened, they become perishable and must be refrigerated or frozen to prevent bacterial growth if left out of refrigeration for too long.
Safe Handling
Always inspect cans before opening. Discard cans that are bulging, leaking, or deeply dented, as these can be signs of spoilage or botulism.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
Do not taste food that looks or smells suspicious.
For opened canned tomatoes, transfer to a clean, airtight container and refrigerate within 2 hours.
