Fresh celery is best stored in the refrigerator to maintain quality and safety. Leaving it at room temperature will cause it to wilt and degrade quickly.

Refrigerator

1 to 2 weeks

Store unwashed celery in a plastic bag or wrapped tightly in aluminum foil in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Trim ends before storing for best results.

Freezer

10 to 12 months

For best quality, wash, trim, and chop celery. Blanch in boiling water for 3 minutes, then cool quickly in ice water. Drain thoroughly, pat dry, and pack into freezer-safe bags or containers, removing as much air as possible.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Limp or rubbery texture
  • Discoloration (yellowing or browning)
  • Slimy surface
  • Off-odor
  • Mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule: Perishable food should not be left out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), food should not be left out for more than 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C), where bacteria can multiply rapidly.

Fresh celery should be refrigerated promptly after purchase. Leaving it at room temperature will cause it to wilt and degrade in quality quickly, and potentially become unsafe if left in the danger zone for too long.
