Not Recommended

Not recommended

Fresh mushrooms should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods due to rapid spoilage.

Refrigerator

5 to 7 days

Store fresh mushrooms in their original packaging or a paper bag in the refrigerator. Avoid storing in airtight plastic bags, which can trap moisture and accelerate spoilage.

Freezer

10 to 12 months (blanched or sautéed)

Mushrooms should be blanched or sautéed before freezing for best quality. Raw mushrooms do not freeze well and may become mushy.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Slimy or sticky texture
  • Dark spots or discoloration
  • Strong, unpleasant odor
  • Shriveled or dried-out appearance
  • Visible mold growth

Room Temperature Safety

Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Fresh mushrooms should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and not left out at room temperature for extended periods to prevent rapid spoilage and bacterial growth.

Expert Tips

Safe Handling

Do not wash mushrooms until immediately before use to prevent premature spoilage.

2

Brush off any dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth.

3

Cook mushrooms thoroughly to an appropriate temperature for consumption.

4

Prevent cross-contamination by keeping raw mushrooms separate from other foods, especially ready-to-eat items.
