Cheddar CheeseShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Once opened, cheddar cheese should not be stored at room temperature for extended periods. Unopened, it can be stored in a cool, dry pantry until the 'Best By' date, but refrigeration is generally preferred for quality.
Refrigerator
3-4 weeks (opened package)
Keep cheddar cheese tightly wrapped in plastic wrap, foil, or an airtight container to prevent drying out and mold growth. Store in the coldest part of the refrigerator, typically the cheese drawer.
Freezer
6 months
For best quality, wrap cheddar cheese tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil, or place in a heavy-duty freezer bag before freezing. Freezing may alter the texture, making it more crumbly, but it remains safe to eat.
Signs of Spoilage
- Mold (especially fuzzy or discolored spots)
- Off-odor (sour, ammonia-like, or unpleasant smell)
- Discoloration (darkening or unusual color changes)
- Slimy or sticky texture
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable foods, including cheddar cheese, should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour. Discard any cheese left out longer than these times.
Safe Handling
Keep cheddar cheese refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Wrap tightly in plastic wrap or foil, or place in an airtight container to prevent drying and mold growth.
If mold appears on hard cheese like cheddar, cut off at least 1 inch around and below the moldy spot. Do not taste the cheese.
Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for cheese and raw meats or produce.
