Pantry

Unopened: 1 year; Opened: Unsafe

Store unopened jars in a cool, dark pantry away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, preserves must be refrigerated immediately.

Refrigerator

1 month

Keep opened preserves tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Always use a clean spoon each time to prevent contamination.

Freezer

1 year for best quality; safe indefinitely at 0°F (-18°C)

While safe to freeze, the texture and flavor of preserves may degrade. Transfer to a freezer-safe, airtight container, leaving headspace, if freezing.

Signs of Spoilage

  • Mold growth on the surface
  • Off-odor (sour, fermented)
  • Unusual discoloration
  • Fizzy appearance or taste (sign of fermentation)

Room Temperature Safety

The 2-hour rule applies: Perishable foods should not be left at room temperature (between 40°F and 140°F) for more than 2 hours. If the temperature is above 90°F (32°C), discard after 1 hour.

The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).

Opened preserves, once removed from refrigeration, should be returned within 2 hours to prevent spoilage and bacterial growth.
