Chicken, frozen, with red chiliShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Raw or frozen chicken should never be stored at pantry temperatures. Thaw only in the refrigerator, cold water, or microwave.
Refrigerator
1-2 days
Thaw in the refrigerator. Once thawed, cook within 1-2 days. Store raw chicken on the lowest shelf to prevent juices from dripping onto other foods. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
9 months
Keep at 0°F (-18°C) or below. For best quality, use within 9 months. Ensure airtight packaging to prevent freezer burn. Do not refreeze thawed chicken that has been at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Signs of Spoilage
- Off-odor (sour, pungent)
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Discoloration (greenish, grayish)
- Mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Thaw frozen chicken in the refrigerator, cold water, or microwave. Never thaw or marinate chicken on the counter. Cook chicken immediately after thawing in the microwave or cold water.
Safe Handling
Cook all chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) as measured with a food thermometer.
Prevent cross-contamination by washing hands, cutting boards, utensils, and countertops with hot, soapy water after contact with raw chicken.
Do not wash raw chicken as it can spread bacteria to other foods and surfaces.
Thaw frozen chicken safely: in the refrigerator (slowest but safest), in cold water (change water every 30 minutes), or in the microwave (cook immediately after thawing).
Never thaw chicken on the counter at room temperature.
