Shredded cheese is highly perishable once opened and should be refrigerated promptly. Unopened, it should also be refrigerated.
Refrigerator
3-4 days after opening
Store in original packaging or a tightly sealed container to prevent drying out and absorption of odors. Keep at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
Up to 6 months
Freeze in original unopened package or in airtight freezer bags. May become crumbly after thawing, best used in cooked dishes.
Signs of Spoilage
- Visible mold (fuzzy or discolored spots)
- Sour or off odor
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Significant discoloration
Room Temperature Safety
40°F–140°F
Perishable foods, including shredded cheese, should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours. If the ambient temperature is above 90°F (32°C), the limit is 1 hour before it should be discarded.
Safe Handling
Keep refrigerated at or below 40°F (4°C).
Wash hands thoroughly before and after handling food.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping cheese separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Do not leave cheese at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
