CilantroShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedNot recommended
Fresh cilantro wilts quickly at room temperature and is highly perishable. For best quality and safety, refrigerate immediately.
Refrigerator
7-10 days
Store fresh cilantro in the refrigerator. For best results, trim the stems, place upright in a jar with about an inch of water, and cover loosely with a plastic bag. Alternatively, wrap in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag or airtight container.
Freezer
10-12 months
Wash and thoroughly dry cilantro. Chop and place in ice cube trays, covering with water or olive oil, then freeze. Once frozen, transfer cubes to an airtight freezer bag or container. Can also be pureed with a small amount of oil and frozen.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp leaves
- Yellowing or browning of leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Visible mold growth
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Fresh cilantro should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and preparation. Do not leave it out on the counter for extended periods, especially after washing, as this can accelerate spoilage and bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash fresh cilantro thoroughly under cool running water before use to remove dirt and potential contaminants.
Avoid cross-contamination by keeping cilantro separate from raw meats, poultry, and seafood.
Use clean cutting boards and utensils when preparing cilantro.
