Pantry
Unopened canned: 1 year (or until 'Best By' date)
Store unopened canned coconut milk in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate immediately; do not store opened coconut milk in the pantry.
Refrigerator
Unopened refrigerated carton: Until 'Use By' date; Opened (canned or carton): 7-10 days
Once opened, transfer canned coconut milk to a clean, non-metal, airtight container. Refrigerate all opened coconut milk promptly at 40°F (4°C) or below.
Freezer
6 months
Freeze coconut milk in airtight containers or ice cube trays. Leave headspace as liquid expands when frozen. Thaw in the refrigerator. Stir well after thawing as separation may occur.
Signs of Spoilage
- Sour or off-odor
- Unusual thickening or lumpy texture
- Visible mold growth
- Discoloration
- Bulging or leaking packaging (for unopened cans/cartons)
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Promptly refrigerate or discard opened coconut milk that has been left in the danger zone for too long to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria.
Safe Handling
Always refrigerate coconut milk promptly after opening.
Do not leave coconut milk at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
Store opened coconut milk in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator.
Discard if left in the danger zone (40°F-140°F) for too long.
