Cod MiltShelf Life, Storage, and Spoilage Guide
Pantry
Not RecommendedUnsafe
Raw seafood should not be stored at room temperature or in the pantry due to rapid bacterial growth.
Refrigerator
1-2 days
Store raw cod milt in the coldest part of the refrigerator (40°F/4°C or below). Place it in a sealed container or on a plate covered with plastic wrap to prevent drips and cross-contamination.
Freezer
6-8 months
For best quality, freeze raw cod milt in airtight packaging (heavy-duty freezer bags or vacuum-sealed bags) to prevent freezer burn. Thaw in the refrigerator before cooking.
Signs of Spoilage
- Strong, sour, or 'fishy' odor
- Slimy or sticky texture
- Dull or faded color
- Any signs of mold
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Always refrigerate or freeze raw cod milt promptly. Discard any raw cod milt left in the danger zone for longer than the recommended time limits.
Safe Handling
Cook all seafood, including cod milt, to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C).
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling raw seafood.
Use separate cutting boards, plates, and utensils for raw seafood to prevent cross-contamination with ready-to-eat foods.
Thaw frozen cod milt in the refrigerator, under cold running water, or in the microwave. Never thaw at room temperature.
Refrigerate or freeze cooked cod milt within 2 hours (1 hour if ambient temperature is above 90°F/32°C).
