Fresh collards will wilt and spoil quickly at room temperature. Store immediately in the refrigerator.
Refrigerator
3-7 days
Store unwashed collard greens in a loose plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Wash thoroughly just before use.
Freezer
10-12 months
For best quality, blanch collard greens before freezing. Wash, chop, blanch in boiling water for 3 minutes, cool quickly in ice water, drain well, then pack into freezer-safe bags or containers.
Signs of Spoilage
- Wilting or limp leaves
- Yellowing or browning of leaves
- Slimy or mushy texture
- Off-odor or sour smell
- Presence of mold
Room Temperature Safety
The 'Danger Zone' for bacterial growth is between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C).
Fresh collards should be refrigerated promptly after purchase and not left at room temperature for extended periods to prevent wilting and bacterial growth.
Safe Handling
Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh produce.
Wash collard greens thoroughly under cool running tap water just before eating or preparing. Do not use soap or detergents.
Remove any damaged or bruised leaves before washing.
Prevent cross-contamination by keeping collards separate from raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
Use a clean cutting board and utensils when preparing collards.
